Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. Mindanao 27th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting

UP Mindanao bagged first place awards at the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. Mindanao 27th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting held on December 1-2, 2022 at Venue 88, General Santos City.

Mr. Virgilio Roi Adaptar, a 4th year BS Food Technology student, won FIRST PLACE in the Undergraduate Research Oral Competition.

Mr. Adaptar presented his undergraduate thesis entitled “Cacao bean shell powder as potential immobilizer for probiotics in simulated gastric and intestinal conditions.” His co-author is Prof. Kriza Faye Calumba (DFSC faculty), who is also his thesis mentor.

Ms. Mely Mariz Amargo, a Research Assistant in the nanoparticles research group, also won FIRST PLACE in the Graduate Research Oral Competition.

Ms. Amargo presented the study entitled “Ecofriendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles using mangosteen pericarp and their antibacterial activity” with Prof. Noreen Grace Fundador (DFSC faculty) as the project leader. The other co-authors are Prof. Erwin Oliver Fundador (DFSC faculty) and Ms. Ella Bucoya (BSFT alumna).
